Our Methodology
1. Our Approach
Free My Solar helps homeowners understand their solar agreements. We review solar contracts, give general guidance, and offer a free consultation. This page explains how we research our content and how we approach every contract review.
2. Our Independence
Free My Solar is not owned by, partnered with, or affiliated with any solar installer, lender, law firm, or solar cancellation company. We do not receive referral fees or commissions from any company we mention. Our content and consultations are not shaped by any outside business relationship.
3. How We Research Our Content
Every article and guide on Free My Solar is based on research from reliable sources. These may include:
- Federal and state consumer protection agencies
- State laws and public regulations
- Utility and public utility commission information
- Court records and public bankruptcy filings
- Solar industry publications and news
- Publicly available company information
- Common contract terms found in solar leases, PPAs, and loans
Whenever possible, we confirm important facts across more than one source before publishing.
4. How We Review Solar Contracts
When a homeowner requests a consultation, we look at the actual agreement rather than general assumptions. Our review focuses on the terms that most often affect a homeowner’s options:
- Agreement type: Whether the contract is a lease, PPA, loan, or cash purchase
- Signing date and cancellation rights: Whether any cooling-off period may still apply
- Termination and buyout terms: What the agreement says about ending early and at what cost
- Transfer terms: How the agreement moves to a buyer if the home is sold
- Payment terms: Monthly payments, escalator clauses, and financing details
- Liens and filings: Whether a UCC-1 fixture filing or similar record affects the home
- Sales promises: Whether written promises match the signed agreement
We then walk the homeowner through what the terms mean and which general paths may be worth exploring.
5. What Our Reviews Are Not
A contract review from Free My Solar is not legal advice and does not create an attorney-client relationship. We do not cancel contracts, negotiate with solar companies, or represent homeowners. We never promise that a homeowner can exit or change an agreement. When a situation calls for legal action, we recommend speaking with a licensed attorney in the homeowner’s state.
6. Keeping Our Content Accurate
Solar laws, company ownership, and industry practices change often. We review and update our content when laws change, companies go bankrupt or change servicers, or we find outdated information.
7. Corrections
If you believe anything on Free My Solar is inaccurate or outdated, please contact us with supporting details. We review every request and correct factual errors promptly.
